Welcome to Schrum Memorial Middle School!

Hoover-Schrum Parents,
I was recently named the principal of Schrum Memorial Middle School and am beyond excited to begin making a difference for our students and community.  Honestly, my excitement to start at Schrum seems out of place, given the most recent events in our country.  I am deeply saddened by the death of George Floyd and Ahamaud Arbery. Still, I take solace knowing that the history of racism in our nation is finally being exposed. Change is never easy because it makes even the most progressive individual uncomfortable. There is a unique opportunity with widespread support that hasn't been present since the civil rights movement to create positive, impactful change.  Schrum Memorial staff will be encouraged to discuss these incidents with each other, and we will begin brainstorming ways to address these critical issues with our students and community.  I thought it pertinent to address this issue first, before sharing information about myself and meeting all you before the 2020-2021 school year.
I grew up in a small town just south of here, Sauk Village, IL.  I attended Bloom Trail High School, went to Saint Xavier University on a partial football scholarship, and began my teaching and coaching career at Bloom High School. Neither of my parents graduated high school, and I am the first in my family to graduate from a four-year university. My parents emphasized the importance of education and worked laborious occupations to support their kids and provide us with opportunities that they did not have.  I have been an administrator since 2007, working at the high school and middle school levels. I have been married for 20 years to my lovely wife Jen, and we have one daughter, Morgan, who will be in 8th grade. We love to travel, but we also like rescuing dogs and cats. My personal mantra is rooted in my faith, and it is to fight for justice, love kindness, and to walk humbly.
My philosophy of education is relatively simple; relationships are the keys to success. Creating a positive school culture and ensuring students are engaged and excited about school and learning will be priorities for myself and Schrum Memorial Staff.  All students can learn and grow, and we will do whatever it takes to help our students succeed!
I look forward to working together with the students, parents, and the local community. I am optimistic that the positive changes we see in our world will result in positive changes at Schrum Memorial Middle School. I cannot wait to join the #SchrumFamily, and even in trying times, I want the parents to know, "We Got This," as long as we work together!
